Ultra-high-speed hyperloop between Edmonton, Calgary secures $550M to help financing
The ultra-high-speed hyperloop proposed to take people between Edmonton and Calgary in about 45 minutes took another step forward this week after securing funding to finance the system.
Two companies, UK-based Broughton Capital Group and China-East Resources Import & Export Co., have agreed in principle to provide a combined US$550 million finance to accelerate the development of the TransPod Line between the two Alberta cities.
The high-speed transportation system is being developed to carry passengers and cargo in a low-pressure tube environment at 1,000 km/h. The vehicles would be powered by electrically driven magnetic propulsion. Morgan Black has the details on the financing announcement and what's next for the project.

Earth Hour: Iconic landmarks across the globe turn off the lights
Iconic landmarks across the globe turned out the lights to mark Earth Hour on Saturday.
The Eiffel Tower and Spain’s Sagrada Familia were among the famous buildings to go dark for one hour, in order to raise awareness about the climate crisis and rapid biodiversity loss.
“I think it is very useful for people to become aware that we are spending a lot of energy, especially with an emblem like the Sagrada Familia,” said one Barcelona resident who came out to see the lights at the famous church go dark.
The Colosseum in Rome and Greece’s Acropolis were among the other landmarks to turn off their lights, along with the Sydney Opera House and the Tokyo Tower.

In tonight's top story, dozens of confidential documents have been entered as evidence at the public inquiry into foreign interference, detailing what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau knew about suspected interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections - and when. As David Akin reports, Katie Telford, Trudeau's chief of staff, testified about when the prime minister was briefed about potential security breaches, including involving allegations against former Liberal MP Han Dong.
Canada had promised to help get some relatives of Canadians out of the war-torn Gaza Strip, but the federal government's temporary visa program has been far less successful than hoped. Heather Yourex-West speaks with Tamer Jarada, a Calgary man who's finally been able to help some of his loved ones get out of Gaza.
Ethan Crumbley was 15 years old when he killed four people and injured seven others in a shooting at a Pontiac, Mich. high school in November 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for his actions. Now, in a first for the U.S., Crumbley's parents are also being held criminally responsible for the attack. Jackson Proskow reports on the couple's prison sentences, the harsh words from the victims' families and the message this landmark ruling sends.
Meanwhile, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the Swiss government's climate policy failures violate human rights. Redmond Shannon looks at how the landmark case came to be and its potential implications for combatting climate change worldwide.
In Edmonton, heated debate is underway about pet owner accountability and the city's animal control bylaws after 11-year-old Kache Grist was killed in a dog attack on April 1. Neetu Garcha reports on what is known about Grist's death, the dogs and their history and why one animal welfare lawyer says Edmonton's bylaw is confusing.
The federal government is pushing for every new light-duty vehicle sold in Canada to be electric by 2035, but questions are growing about how that goal will be reached. Mike Drolet explains how Canada's mining industry will be crucial to maintaining a steady supply of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Plus, the total solar eclipse captivated millions of people and is well understood by scientists, but what effect does it have on animals? Mike Armstrong speaks with researchers at Granby Zoo in Granby, Que., about what they observed in the behaviour of several species.
